Why we’ve started BlueZone – the answer to adding prevention to home care in Australia

I lost my mum to heart disease when she was just 46. I wish she’d had BlueZone.

Soon after, I watched my grandmother’s health decline rapidly after she entered residential aged care. With minimal movement and activity to help her stay strong and independent. Ever since, I couldn’t shake the feeling that ageing didn’t have to look like this.

There had to be another way. A way for people to grow older with strength, confidence and dignity. A way to make those final decades full of movement, not limitation.

That’s where the idea for BlueZone began.

Why home care holds the key

Australia’s home care system supports hundreds of thousands of older people to live independently. It’s powered by some of the most committed carers you’ll ever meet – people who genuinely care about the wellbeing of those they support.

But too often, the system focuses on maintaining function rather than improving it. Clients are supported to cope, not to grow stronger. BlueZone exists to change that.

We train home care staff to deliver simple, effective strength and mobility programs as part of everyday care. These programs don’t require complex equipment or clinical settings – just time, guidance and human connection.

By empowering care staff to help clients move better, we can scale preventative health across Australia. That’s something traditional allied health alone could never achieve.

A smarter future for aged care economics

The numbers tell a clear story: as Australia’s population ages, the cost of home and residential care will rise dramatically over the next two decades. If nothing changes, spending will outpace GDP growth.

BlueZone offers a better model. Every fall prevented, every hospital visit avoided, every extra year of independence delivers savings for the system, and a better quality of life for the person.

Prevention isn’t just the right thing to do; it’s the economically sustainable thing to do. Healthier clients mean lower hospital costs, more efficient use of home care funding and a workforce motivated by real results.

Inspired by the world’s Blue Zones

We took inspiration from the original “Blue Zones” – the regions around the world where people live longer, healthier, more connected lives. In those places, movement isn’t a chore. It’s woven into daily life. People garden, walk, lift, stretch and connect. They move because they want to live fully, not because they have to recover.

That’s the spirit behind BlueZone. We bring the principles of longevity and purposeful movement into Australian home care – helping older Australians rediscover strength, balance and confidence in their own homes.

Changing the story of ageing

We’ve built BlueZone because I believe ageing doesn’t have to mean decline. With the right support, older Australians can keep doing the things they love: walking on the beach, gardening, playing with grandkids, or simply getting up from a chair with ease.

When we invest in movement, we invest in independence. And when we invest in independence, we build a healthier, more sustainable future for everyone.

Because getting older should mean living better – not less. Let’s move and improve.
